Our favorite magazines, organizations, and classes to help your nonprofit amplify its reach
With 1.5M+ nonprofit corporations registered in the United States, organizations absolutely must adopt marketing best practices to effectively create brand awareness, fundraise, engage volunteers, and secure members. However, only 26% of nonprofit marketers say their organizations are effective at content marketing. Fortunately, numerous free or low-cost resources exist to grow your organization’s internal capacity to create, deliver, and evaluate marketing content. Here are our favorite nonprofit marketing resources to get you started:
1. Blue Avocado
Blue Avocado is an online magazine and monthly newsletter designed to provide practical, tactical tips and tools to nonprofit leaders. A range of practitioners, funders, and experts comprise the team of contributors. Online access remains free for all 65K+ members thanks to the support of generous donors. Highlights of articles from their marketing and communications section include NextGen Nexus: How to Build an Engagement Pathway for Millennials, Some Say Fundraising is Just Sales: They’re Wrong!, Why You May Need to Delete Half of Your Email List, and the funny How to Schedule a Nonprofit Meeting.
2. Joan Garry’s Nonprofit Leadership Lab
Joan Garry is one of my favorite nonprofit figures! She has worked with thousands of nonprofits across America, written Joan Garry’s Guide to Nonprofit Leadership, and started the Nonprofit Leadership Lab to fill a gap in information for board and staff leaders of small nonprofit organizations. The lab includes masterclasses, expert seminars, quick wins, downloadable resources, live Q&As with Joan Garry and other experts, member makeovers, and access to an exclusive Facebook group. Marketing topics cover getting press on the cheap, building your social media audience, telling your story, and communicating your elevator pitch. Keep in mind that the lab only opens to new members a few times a year, so be sure to sign up to receive an invitation.
3. Nonprofit Associations
One of the best local resources is your state’s nonprofit association, a statewide membership organization that aims to strengthen communities by building the capacity of nonprofits. The services offered by nonprofit associations vary but might include advocacy, research, news, job boards, conferences, webinars, and in-person training. Find your state’s association and connect with local experts by visiting the Council of Nonprofit’s website.
4. CharityHowTo
CharityHowTo provides affordable, high-quality professional development available for nonprofit leaders anywhere in the world. By leveraging the CharityHowTo Nonprofit Professional development and education platform, nonprofit professionals can excel at their job, their career, and create a bigger impact for the causes they care about. Their offerings include 100s of webinars a year on 29 topics, microlessons, and a google grants service. Some of their top-rated marketing webinars are Google Ad Grants 101; How to Use LinkedIn, Marketing Collateral, and Messaging Templates to Expand Your Network, How to Set your Nonprofit up for Social Media Fundraising Success, and How to Promote Your Online Fundraising Campaign.
5. Candid Learning
Candid Learning, previously known as GrantSpace, is a comprehensive platform for live and on-demand training, webinars, and other resources for fundraising, sustainability, grantmaking, and transparency. Their programs cover best practices in fundraising, as well as the hard and soft skills required to be an effective advocate and leader of your organization. In addition, Candid Learning offers expert advice from funders and nonprofit experts to help with confident decision-making and excellence in social sector operations.
